My region Upper Silesia

 The Silesian voivodeship, located in the south of Poland. The region’s over 70 cities have a total population of approximately 4.8 million people (for comparison, Polish capital city – Warsaw, has a population of approx. 1.8 million). Thanks to a well-developed road, rail, bus and tram infrastructure, commuting between cities such as Katowice (regional capital), Sosnowiec, Gliwice, Zabrze, Bytom or Ruda Śląska is cheap and easy. You can never get bored in Silesia. Although the region’s image is to a large extent shaped by industry, an abundance of forests, parks and green recreational areas ensure tranquility and contact with nature in the industrial heart of Poland.

The region’s largest city, Katowice, has a population of over 310.000 people. Located on the Rava river, the city is an administrative, economic and cultural capital of Silesia. Thanks to a thriving airport, as well as a network of throughways and motorways Silesia is one of the most attractive regions in terms of communication and transport. Regional authorities and diplomatic posts are based here, and various districts of Katowice offer an impressive number of cinemas, theatres and culture centres. Postindustrial and post-mining areas are increasingly changing and transforming into popular meeting places for young people, whom they attract thanks to numerous concerts, exhibitions and meetings with artists.The single most characteristic facility in Katowice is the famous Spodek, which is one of the largest multipurpose arenas in Poland. Spodek has played host to many bands and performers, including such stars as Pearl Jam, Green Day, Jean Michelle Jarre, Rammstein or Leonard Cohen, who gave unforgettable concerts each attended by thousands of people. The arena is also the venue for sporting events and international matches – it has hosted, e.g. basketball, volleyball and hockey stars. Events which attract even larger audiences are held on the Silesian Stadium, located only 7 km away from the centre of Katowice. It is here that tens of thousands of people had fun at concerts by such world-famous bands as the Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, U2 or Metallica.

The Silesian Stadium is located on the premises of the Silesian Culture and Recreation Park, which is one of the largest city parks in Europe (covering an area of over 600 hectares). Alongside the extensive green area, the following are located in the park: Silesian Zoological Garden, Silesian Amusement Park, Silesian Planetarium, a ropes course, a swimming pool complex, tennis courts and a paintball field. One of the most popular places among the inhabitants of Katowice is the Three Lake Valley which offers many cycle tracks. Also popular is the nearby Muchowiec Airport which is mainly used for sport purposes.Art lovers in Silesia can visit one of a dozen or so state-owned or private museums, as well as an opera or a concert hall. There are cinemas, museums and galleries in each of the cities in the region.For those who love night life, Katowice offers a multitude of bars, pubs, restaurants, clubs and discos playing all sorts of music. Local media regularly inform inhabitants about the most important events, exhibitions, festivals and meeting.

Countryside can be interesting..

My daily life is city based so my countryside landscape is very interesting for me. I love travelling and taking photos of different parts of country which is different from our city view. I like visiting farms but only for pleasure. Last summer I visited my cousin who live in the north at my place. Her landscape is typically rustic.There are  big farms there and different models of barns..

Oscar goes to Polish film "IDA"

Today it is a special and great day for Poland because we have won Oscar 2015. Our film IDA got an SCAR. Honestly I haven't watched this movie, yet. But I am going to do it. I believe it is a great film...

 Shot in black-and-white, ‘Ida’ is a beautifully photographed and sensitive account of the dark days of the People’s Republic of Poland, which contains as its subject matter what the historian Norman Davies has described as ‘the meanest of controversies’, that of Polish Jewish relations in the middle of the twentieth century.

My ancestors visited this church very often....

My ancestors' life was strictly connected with Carpathian Region. They had lived there before the WWI since 15th or 16Th century. So it is a very very long time. Only some trees could survive that long period. Some of them did.
Firstly the church in Szebnie was a place where my ancestors celebrated the most important events of their lives. As I know my ancestors didn't live so long . Why? The answer is easy. The medicine wasn't developed so well and there wan no antibiotics..

Szebnie is a village located 10 km from Jaslo in Carpathian Region . The first churcg was built in 1606. And what it is interesting it has survived the WWI , WWII and communism.. And it is still exists but a few years ago the new one was built.

 It is a lovely wooden church..

Yesterday I visited my friends who live in Katowice. The day was sunny it seems spring has arrived..
All photos show typical a housing estate in Katowice. Some detached houses were built probably in 1970 but the last ones dated back  from 21 st century..

 Each property is surrounded by fence..

 And recycling ....

 The street is empty... but it Saturday ... Lazy day..

Traditionally, name day celebrations (Polish: imieniny) have often enjoyed a celebratory emphasis greater than that of birthday celebrations in Poland. However, birthday celebrations are increasingly popular and important, particularly among the young as well as the older generation in the new territories gained after The Second World War due to remaining Prussian Protestant influences. Imieniny involve the gathering and socialising of friends and family at the celebrant's home, as well as the giving of gifts and flowers at home and elsewhere, such as at the workplace. Local calendars often contain the names celebrated on a given day.

At my place we only celebrate birthday but we have belonged to Germany for 3 centuries so we have followed German traditions and customs.It is obvious..

In Poland people usaully prefer metal fences but I love wooden ones which were common here in  the past when the wood was the most popular material..

I love Polish cuisine but French, Italian, Greek are  fantastic,too.  But I also love fast food from time to time. And my favourite food is Turkish kebab. Kebab is spicy and salty but in my opinion is delicious.. And what about you?.

But unhappily each of us will has the last one in life..

Ash Wednesday.. tradition..

Easter observances in Poland actually begin on Ash Wednesday, when pussy willows called in polish "bazie" or "kotki"  are cut and placed in the water. These pussy willow twigs are used later on Palm Sunday as "palms" to be blessed in the church, because palms are not available in Poland. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, which is a commemoration of Christ's entry into Jerusalem. High Mass features a reading of Christ's Passion. During the Great Fast it is customary to participate in special religious observances such as Stations of the Cross, Bitter Lamentations, and an annual three-day retreat which closes with the reception of the sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist. The Easter season ends on Easter Monday when the traditional "Smigus-Dyngus" custom is observed.

Most people who live at my place take part in this tradition .

Today the first year of my blogging has finished/ It was a great year. Why because I have met a lot of wonderful friends around the world. I would like  to thank all my new friends from Australia, US and Europe. Thanks to my blogging I am definitely better at geography which wasn't my favourite subject in school. And my knowledge about the world has improved

Upper Silesia is varied there are the old buildings and the new ones . This detached house was built in 19th century for power plant workers . Now is abandoned.. In the past it wsas a stylish buliding...
