Ash Wednesday

 10th February 2016

This year carnival was very short  so today is Ash Wednesday and it means we start Lent. So people who are Roman Catholic go to church to put some piece of ash on their heads. The ash reminds us we live on Earth is so short.

This Roman Catholic Church is located in Piekary Sląskie on Upper Silesia. It is 100 years old. In my opinion is very beautiful and impressive.

There is a cave next to the church.

Photos I took yesterday.

  1. I think what you call a cave as shown, we here call a GROTTO.
Quite a few of the old churches have "grottos" on their grounds, the college I went to in Sydney for my boarding days had a huge artificial grotto next to the college Olympic Pool. Amusing to think of it now - boys in speedoes under the watchful eye of "The Virgin Mary" !!!
My desk calendar no longer has the dates of such days as Ash Wednesday - it offends some people???
    Cheers

  5. The grotto is lovely. Being a Lutheran, we also observe the ashes. The kids in Sunday School last Sunday had a burning for the ashes, and they will be used at the service today and tonight.
