Road signs and traffic rules in Poland

11th February 2015

Each country is different so the traffic rules, too. In Polish school children are educated how to behave in the streets since they start their primary school at 6. Some schools decided to build " sample streets with  road signs" for educational purpose..

It a  sample street located next to Elementary and High Junior School ..

Road signs around my place

Do you know them ? Or they are different in your corner of the world...

Some rules of the road and driving tips for driving in Poland
  • Traffic drives on the right hand side of the road and overtaking should be on the left of the overtaken car. On dual carriageways you will find many drivers overtaking using the inside lane, so be careful of these no-brains!
  • All year round all vehicles must use headlights both night and day in Poland.
  • You are required to carry a warning triangle, first aid kit and small fire extinguisher in cars.
  • Accidents must be reported to the police. It's illegal to leave the scene of an accident.
  • Trams may be passed on the right; but when a tram stops, drivers must yield to the passengers who leave the tram.
  • Buses leaving a bus stop have the right of way.
  • Watch out for the big trees growing in rows along many Polish roads.
  • It is prohibited in Polish law to use hand-held mobile phones while driving

  1. Why are the big trees along the side of the road dangerous? Do they tend to jump in front of passing cars? lol

  2. That is a good idea to teach when young. It's taught a little here but probably not like it is in Poland.
We drive on the left hand side of the road.
We don't have to put lights on in the daytime.
We are not permitted to use a hand held mobile phone whilst driving.
There are a few other rules.

  3. More and more places are setting up fines for using cell phones in your hand while driving. Need those blue tooth devices set up in your car for sure.

  4. we do not require headlights during the day, here. school zones here are now banning cell phone use while driving, but otherwise most places allow them.

  5. We need headlights all the time, no talking on hand-held phones, must stop for tram passengers. This course is a good idea!

  6. The signs are very much international and should be understood by everyone. Unlike in England, we are allowed to overtake on the 'wrong' side.

We don't have to use headlights during the day.

We don't have to carry a triangle, first aid kit and fire extinguisher.

Accidents only have to be reported if someone is injured or other property is damaged, such as someone's fence or a set of traffic lights.

Tram and bus, the same as your rules.

    Mobile phone the same.

Trees jumping out onto the road is a problem here too.

  8. As long as you can drive on the left hand side of the road. It is a big problem when people from other states and countries drive in Melbourne and don't know they have to stop for people getting on and off trams. Not a problem for you.

  9. Our newer cars have 'daytime running lights' that are on all the time. Many cars have an auto light feature, where the lights switch from the daytime to nighttime lights depending on how dark it is, so you never have to worry. We don't have any rules about first aid kits or fire extinguishers in the car., though personally, I always have a first aid kit. I did once see a miniature town for teaching kids about road safety at a police station - not sure sure if it's still there.

  10. I saw that Lesley told about USA's running lights. We do have a Safety Town in my town for younger kids. I did teach my students about the safe way of crossing the street.

  12. It's a good idea to teach kids about road signs. In mny homecountry, reckless drivers pose danger to good big trees along the road. I think those road signs are pretty much international.

  13. Some of the road signs are the same, but others I didn't recognize. Interesting to hear about Poland's traffic laws. Here in Iowa headlights only have to be used between sunset and sunrise and for a 30 minute period before sunset and after sunrise.

  15. I have lived in France and US but never encountered such signs especially the one with minus sign with red circle in the background. I asked for what it stands for from my cousin who works with a Los Angeles DUI attorney and even he had no clue. Any idea what it depicts?
