American born Zygmunt - my grandfathr's brother died in Pensylvannia

28th October 2015

My grandfather George was American born and his brothers, too. But unfortunately his younger brother Sigmund died in US at the age of 3. I believe it was tragedy for my great grandparents.Later in 1911 my great grandparent John died and it turned out my great grandmother decided to come back Poland. But it was not the right decision... Why..... ?? So many reasons. WWI, WWII , communism and s o on..

The oldest photo in my family. It was taken in 1902 in Coatesville in PA - USA. Sigmund is on the right. My grandfather George is on the left.

Yesterday I was thinking about Sigmund who stayed forever in USA because nobody visited his grave... And I don't know ..Does it exist or no..... I am waiting for answer from management of graveyard.

  1. I'm imagining, like you, that since there is no record of his grave at the cemetary, that the family may not have been able to afford a grave. So sad.

    What a wonderful photo :)

  3. I hope you find out it does. Hard sometimes when graves are very old, often just a cross was placed these rot, are not replaced. There are a couple of cemeteries in our city that are now parks..

    1. Margaret I believe he had cross because his mother ran the inn for workers from Europe so they weren't poor...

  4. Diphtheria was a common cause of death for children before antibiotics and vaccinations became available. How awful for families. I hope you are able to find the grave of your grandfather's brother.

  5. I know that a friend of mine's mother was buried in a "temporary grave" because the family could not afford a grave plot. I hope you are able to find the grave, dear Gosia.

  6. I'd guess the grave is still there, as I have ancestors buried in the US going way back. Thanks for sharing our very touching story.
